Google TV is the system we recommend most often. Its home screen gathers shows and films from all your services into one list, voice search works well, and almost every app is available. The harder question is which box to run it on. There are only a few good ones, and they suit different budgets. These are the four to look at in 2026.

Google TV or Android TV: What Is the Difference?
They are the same system underneath. Android TV is the platform, and Google TV is the newer home screen that sits on top of it, built around recommendations instead of rows of apps. Both use the Google Play Store and run the same apps. A box labeled Android TV, such as the NVIDIA Shield, runs everything a Google TV box does. It just looks a little different when you turn it on.
Google TV Streamer (4K): The One to Buy
Google's own box is the best Google TV device for most homes. With 4GB of memory and 32GB of storage it stays quick, even with dozens of apps installed. It has an Ethernet port for a wired connection, supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and doubles as a smart home hub. If the remote goes missing, a button on the back of the box makes it ring.
It also gets updates directly from Google, so new features arrive here first.

I want this box →Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen): Best on a Budget
Xiaomi's box gives you most of the experience for much less. It runs Google TV with the same apps and the same home screen, has 32GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6, and supports Dolby Vision and Atmos. It has less memory than Google's box, so it is a little slower when switching between apps, and it relies on Wi-Fi. For a bedroom TV or a first box it is very good value.

Google TV, 32GB storage, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Vision and Atmos, HDMI 2.1.
I want this box →onn. Google TV 4K Streaming Box: The Cheapest Way In
The onn. box is Walmart's house brand, and it is the least expensive way to get real, certified Google TV in 4K. It is basic: less storage and a plainer remote. But it runs the same apps as the others. On Amazon it is sold by third-party sellers, so compare the price before you buy.

I want this box →NVIDIA Shield TV Pro: The Power Pick
The Shield runs Android TV, not the Google TV home screen, but it uses the same Play Store and the same apps, and it is the most powerful Android box you can buy. AI upscaling makes HD video look sharper on a 4K screen, and two USB ports and Gigabit Ethernet make it the choice for home theater fans and anyone with their own media library.

What to Check Before You Buy
- Certification. Look for the Google TV or Android TV logo from a known brand. Uncertified boxes play Netflix and others in low resolution.
- Storage. 8GB fills up fast. 16GB is fine, and 32GB means you never think about it.
- Ethernet. If the box will sit near your router, a wired connection is worth having for live TV.
- Dolby Vision. Only matters if your TV supports it. If it does, buy a box that does too.
Set It Up in Ten Minutes
Plug the box into a free HDMI port, connect power, and sign in with your Google account. The Google Home app on your phone copies your Wi-Fi details and account across, which saves typing with the remote. Then turn on Dolby Vision or 4K in the display settings, and install your apps from the Apps tab.
For picture quality after that, our TV picture settings guide takes fifteen minutes.
What to Watch on It
Google TV includes a Live tab with free channels, and every major subscription app is in the store. For a full live lineup with sports and a large film library in one place, two services we point readers to are Ovello TV and ScreenHouse. Each lists more than 25,000 live channels and 120,000 movies and series, streams at up to 4K, and runs on Google TV and Android TV boxes.
Setup happens with you over WhatsApp in about 15 minutes. There is no contract or auto-renewal and both list a 7-day money-back guarantee.
Our Verdict
Buy the Google TV Streamer unless you have a reason not to. Choose the Xiaomi TV Box S to save money, the onn. box to spend the least, and the Shield TV Pro if you want the most powerful box and do not mind the older design. For a wider look at every platform, see our top 5 TV boxes for 2026.
